Black & white TV series (1953-58), 4 shows, approx. running 45 minutes in each VHS tape starring William Bendix & Majorie Reynolds. Episodes included are: RILEY ENGAGES AN ESCORT / RILEY EXCUTIVE TYPE / RILEY STEPS OUT / RILEY CAMPS OUT WITH GILLIS. Truly one of a most hilarious series of the 1950s about the misadventures of the hapless, never-do-well "blue collar" Riley and his family. Riley, like Ralph Camden on "The Honeymooners" is a guy with grand schemes for success that everyone else realizes are "pipe-dreams" but Riley. William Bendix is the perhap bumbling Chester A. Riley, with a very comical presence. A good supporting cast with Majorie Reynolds as wife, Peg; Lugene Sanders as daughter, Babs; Wesley Morgan as son, Junior; Tom D'Andrea as hilarious neighbor & best friend who gets Riley into deeper trouble all the time, Gillis, and occasional guest-star Sterling Holloway, later the voice of Disney's Winnie-the-Pooh. It is easy to see this series as the inspirtation for the 1980s "Married with Children" with Al as an up-dated Riley and both had wives named Peg (who always was looking for hubby's paycheck), one daughter, one wise-cracking son and one scheming neighbor, who helped Al/Chester get into more trouble than they would have. Series still holds up well, still funny after all these years. A Classic comedy with Bendix as the show (but still a great supporting cast).
